For Korrie Besems a photograph is a mysterious and unfathomable entity, like quicksand. As soon as the top layer of a photo has been cut open, deeper layers filled with vagueness, spots, holes, words or fragments of text become visible. By playing with this loosely, she is able to dissect photographs with the aim of elevating them to a more universal poetic level, detached from the factual description and the immutability of the captured moment in the photograph. It is a sort of subjective data mining.

Her works refer to the unreliability of memory. Although photographs are capable of evoking long-lost memories, they are never complete or objective. Just like everyone's memory which is in a constant transition.
